Print Review: “Photography for Perverts”

Photography for Perverts
By Charles Gatewood
199 pages, soft bound

Charles Gatewood has been a lovable pervert lovably photographing other lovable perverts for 40 fantastic years. His often quirky, occasionally shocking, frequently sexy, always thought-provoking images have raised eyebrows, tempers, pulses, and erections. They have offended, aroused, and inspired. How does he do it?

In the nearly 200 pages of Photography for Perverts Gatewood carefully explains exactly that, while also providing an abundance of information about photographic technique, determining ones’ motivation, meeting models, negotiating kinky shoots, becoming involved with various communities, securing locations, organizing gallery shows, finding additional resources, and keeping all paperwork straight. In addition to this crash course in gonzo photography, Gatewood provides four biographies of photographers he considers contemporary masters: Annie Sprinkle, Michael Rosen, Barbara Nitke, and Eric Kroll.

There’s an abundance of useful and insightful advice here, as well as entertaining personal observations, introductions to other artists – and plenty of visual examples!
