Print Review: “Nymph”

By Francesca Lia Bloc
127 pages, soft bound

Francesca Lia Bloc’s charming and touchingly erotic near-fairy tale short stories has been re-issued, this time in paperback. This soft cover book is the perfect size to fit into a pocket or small purse for reading away from home.

Each story is complete in itself but also a chapter that reflects upon earlier and yet-to-come revelations in the greater work that is Nymph. Readers will come to learn about the thoughts, feelings, motivations, desires, and spirits of each character – and genuinely care about them.

Although Bloc’s fairy tale language is a change from the more active styles employed by other writers, the subject matter reaches out to embrace that style and show it to be perfectly suited to the job at hand, which is turning on the mind as well as the body.

Good things do come in small packages and the return of these tiny tales to soft binding is a reaffirmation of that fact.
